Keys for good essay papers
Do you consider yourself a talented writer, someone who can easily write all kinds of essay papers? Do you think you know how to write a good assignment? Alternatively, quite on the contrary, do you often find yourself in this situation: asking yourself how is it that you got a C minus in a course where all your classmates got straight A’s? How is it possible for some student to always write great essays while others are always trying harder for nothing? Are they just talented writers? Or is there such thing as an “essay recipe” that they know of, and you haven’t heard of?
The answer is somewhere in between. We regret to inform you that some people are more skilled at writing tasks –and if you have read up to here, we may assume that’s not your case-. However, you can still learn new things and improve your writing with lots of practice. So relax! We can teach you how to write a successful essay paper just by following some simple tips. Of course, no matter which technique you actually end up using, the best thing you can always do is to write, write, write!
Use the appropriate register
Essay papers are not short stories. They are not letters to your grandmother, and they are definitely something to be taken seriously. That is why you should always keep in mind the formal distance between you and the potential reader (that is, the teacher correcting and grading the essay). So focus on finding the appropriate formal register. Improve the style immediately by changing phrases like “I guess” or “They say” by others a bit more formal, such as “According to the experts”, or “From my point of view”.
Implement the use of synonyms
Do you often find yourself typing the very same words repeatedly? Maybe it’s time for you to get a thesaurus. Your essay style will improve if you find the way to vary the words and expressions, and begin changing some of them into their synonyms. Of course, always make sure they still make sense when changed, since not every synonym is appropriate in any context. You can also use pronouns or relative clauses to avoid repetitions.
What about the editorial we?
Also known as majestic plural, we are referring to the use of plural some essay authors implement when they try to include the reader in their reasoning. However, is it really appropriate to use the editorial we when writing an essay? Not always. When it comes to autobiography or personal essays (very common topics for college applications) it is better to use the first person (I) all the time. A majestic plural would sound artificial and presumptuous.
