History Coursework – A Tribute to The Past!

How to do a History Coursework?

The human mind is very inquisitive. We always demand answers for every question that is being asked. We are rather curious to know what happened before our period. There are a lot of questions to which people are still trying to dig up the right answers. Many things that happened in the past still remain a mystery. The rest is called history! We have compiled the known facts about the past and made it a subject called history. In is important for one to know about one’s ancestors. History consists of a series of events that happened, the people involved, the culture and religion followed during that time and so on. It is very interesting to read about what our ancestors did, about what led to whatever we are now, who were responsible for the changes that were brought in and so on. Some of us can even relate ourselves to that particular period and imagine what we would have done, given that situation. So, history is an interesting and important subject that is made a part of the curriculum for students. They are expected to do a history coursework that will be valued by their teachers and awarded some marks.

A coursework is any assignment that is given by the teachers to the students on a particular subject. The marks obtained by the students in the coursework will constitute around 20% of the total marks in the main exams. The first step for doing a coursework well is to develop in interest in it. Only when you create an interest and love for the subject, can you do it well. Doing any assignment well without any involvement at all, is of hardly any use. It may fetch you some marks. But it serves no purpose in the long run. Therefore try to develop the right interest and attitude for the subject. Then, you can consider half the job done! A Coursework is given in many subjects. For instance, we have physics coursework,  chemistry coursework, biology coursework, English coursework, French coursework, psychology coursework and so on. A history coursework comes in that order too.

A coursework in history needs a lot of attention to detail. You should be very specific while writing something. In history, if anything is very important at all, it is the time. You should be very careful while mentioning a year. There is a lot of difference between “1843” and “1834” or “1745” and “1845”! You can call it a small misplacement of digits, but it does a big damage to history! So, be very careful while mentioning the dates.

While giving a detailed account of an incident, stick to what happened. Ensure that you have mentioned only the facts. Do not invent incidents! Your teacher wouldn’t be too happy about it if you become too creative while doing history! It is always better to refer to an authentic source while doing the coursework as this is not a subject that you can write on your own. The language, the flow of writing could be in your style, but not the intended meaning. Always refer to an authentic source.

These are some of the tips to be follows while writing a history coursework.

Romeo and Juliet Coursework- The Most Mesmerizing Love Drama Evermore!

Work with the most interesting topic for a coursework!

Introduction

A Romeo and Juliet coursework is a coursework submitted by a student in a literature field. Like other course works this is also submitted as a part of assessments for getting extra credentials apart from the examination point of view.

Shakespeare- Romeo and Juliet

There is no one in the field of English literature who does not know the greatest English playwright of the 18th century William Shakespeare. He is the world’s greatest dramatist and writer who has written many plays that evolves around history, romance, tragedy, etc. the Romeo and Juliet play is one of his master pieces. There is also a rumor that this play was written after his love break-up and that is the reason for the play’s tragic ending!

How to write a Romeo and Juliet coursework?
Now this coursework is not like a chemistry coursework or physics coursework where you will be given a particular topic on which you have to write a coursework which will involve a deep analysis and your own research supported by proofs. This coursework is a topic that has been written as a play by one of the greatest people in the literature field. This coursework will include assignments that contain answers to the content-related questions, analysis over the language used in the play (it is the oldest English language that has been used in all the plays of Shakespeare and one that is difficult to interpret), the interpretations of the characters in the play, the style of writing of the author, etc. to do this assignment effectively, you should listen to the classes taken on Romeo and Juliet and read as many articles or supplements as possible. This will help you during the writing process of the Romeo and Juliet coursework.

You should remember that Romeo and Juliet is not a story book where each incident will be given in detail that will help the reader to imagine that situation. A play is not so, readers have to imagine the play on a stage to get an idea of what a real play is. To be able to imagine the play with vivid detail, the reader should not just read the dialogues of the characters but also the stage directions that are given along the play as they provide hints on how to interpret the characters dialogue. You can write a coursework on this also. Remember that the play is not just a work of art but one that is considered as a symbol of love and one from centuries ago.

The Romeo and Juliet coursework can contain your favorite quotations from the play or the famous quotations that is like by many people. To give the introduction to the coursework, you should know the time when Shakespeare wrote the play to determine if the were any influence on him to write the play and other details. All the course works relating to the Romeo and Juliet play should be a textual analysis as the assignment is related to a play already written by a person. Any quotations taken from the play should be written along with the act, scene and line number.

Tips on How to write a descriptive essay

Students are taught to write essays right from when the attend school. But what exactly is an essay? An essay is a short piece of writing that is written from the author’s own point of view. A student can write an essay in any way he wants. There are essentially for types of essays. They are descriptive essay, narrative essay, persuasive essay and expository essay. The following is about the general essay format and how to write a descriptive essay. All the essays basically have three main parts. They are the following.

  • Introduction
  • The main body
  • Conclusion

The introduction is the main part that introduces the topic to the readers. It briefs the readers on what the essay is about. There are many tips on how to write an essay introduction. The main body, as the name implies is the part that talks about the subject of the essay in detail. This body of the essay must contain at least three main points around which the entire essay revolves. The essay conclusion is the final part of the essay that has conclusive points that the writer wants to insist upon. This is the basic essay format for all essays.

The descriptive essay is a type of essay that is written by almost all students. The basic difference between a description and narration is that while description deals with the details of physical attributes of things, while narration deals with the sequence of events that happened from the writer’s own point of view. It can also include the writer’s own opinions and experiences. For example, an essay on “My Pet Dog” could be both descriptive and narrative. When the essay deals with the appearance, smell, touch (and so on) of the dog, it is a descriptive essay. If the dog looks brown and hairy to you, it will look brown and hairy to me and every Tom, Dick and Harry! The physical attributes of the dog cannot change according to the writers unless there’s some serious witchcraft or wizardry going on! But when the essay is about your experiences with your pet dog, the way it plays with you and the like, it becomes a narrative essay. Your experiences with the dog will not be the same as mine. So any sequence of events or personal experience becomes a narrative essay and the physical attributes of things that can be felt by all, becomes a descriptive essay.

A descriptive essay should give work to the readers’ senses. It means that the readers must be made to use all their five senses while reading your essay – sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. The writer must also remember the difference between “showing” and “telling” while writing the essay. It means that the writer should make sure that the readers can imagine using their senses, what is being written. This is “showing” the readers what you are writing.

Therefore these are some of the tips to be kept in mind if you want to know how to write a descriptive essay.

Dissertation Format-The Prime Rule of a Dissertation!

Monday, February 9th, 2009

Guidelines to write the format

A dissertation format is different from an essay format as it is researched work of a person and not just an assignment or article.

The format for a dissertation:
A formal dissertation should follow the given format:

Topic selection:
The format of a dissertation starts from the basics like the selection of a topic for your dissertation. A substantial and significant topic is required for your dissertation which depends on the instructions given to you by your tutor.

Coordinating the thesis statement:
A thesis statement is as important as essay titles that are given to essays. The thesis statement should goal driven; it should intrude the curiosity of the readers and importantly it should be significant and feasible. This is the most important part of a dissertation format.

Introduction:
The introduction should provide a background presentation and an over view of your dissertation. It should be short and to the point without any exaggeration over your study of the topic.

Review of literature:
References are very important to the dissertations as they are the backbone to the study that you provide in the dissertation. References and proof from the written work of the other people or from any other written documents is strong evidence to your points in the work. So make sure that the external documents come from reliable and reputable resources.

Methodological analysis:
This is a vital part in a dissertation format as it is the part or a segment where all the information regarding the data gathering is given. The information contains all the ways and means by which you got the information you got for the dissertation. It also contains the procedures of the data analysis used in the entire dissertation.

Statistical analysis and results:
Always make sure that you have a proper and pertinent numerical data in the statistical analysis are accurate and pertinent. This is very important as they have to support the hypothesis testing.

Conclusion:
The conclusion should have a significant conclusion that contains all the important details in the dissertation and the entire research process. This should be a wrap-up of your dissertation.

This is the basic format that is followed for simple dissertations that you need to submit in the high school and college levels. A formatted dissertation is characterized by the proper sequencing of chapters along with the other materials like tables, statistics, diagrams, pictures, illustrations and the other pages like title page and abstract. The dissertation format for a highly professional dissertation is however more complex and concentrates over the minute things like the page size, page width, etc. these types of dissertations are used in professions by people who are well knowledgeable over the profession. They also need to submit a few documents like a copyright page.

Dissertation Questions

A useful guide for dissertation format.

These dissertation questions aim to help you to your dissertation guide. As you see a dissertation format is different than an essay format.

What are the issues that I need to examine before choosing dissertation topics?

First of all, the topic should suit to your personal interests (scientific, professional, political, philosophical, etc.) It is very helpful if you have a good background in terms of degree courses you have attended and are relevant to the topic.

How specific should the topic be?

It should be specific enough to start your dissertation with some relative certainty. If the topic is not very specific, then a preliminary study of the literature is needed. You should be able to understand / determine the cognitive area in which the topic belongs to.

What sources should I look to?

Generally, the order of importance of the sources is: a) books, b) scientific journal articles, c) Articles of scientific conferences. Most sources, however, are scientific articles in journals and conferences. These writings are evaluated by scientists before they are published (and are evaluated in an indirect way after they have been published) and thus are safe to use as references but you should always study them with a critical view. Generally, you should not have as a central source of your dissertation other sources such as newspaper articles, personal opinions from people on the internet pages, etc. Do prefer recent sources and make sure that a relatively old source has still certain value and it is not superseded by events before you rely on it.

What do you mean by critical view?

A critical view requires understanding of the topic and then designs a personal and informed perspective thereon. You should be able to deal with questions and criticism, even about things you consider obvious,in other words you should realize why you have a certain position / argument. Take into consideration that some examiners-readers-listeners may not have deep knowledge on the subject of your dissertation and so they will make your very basic and simple questions - which are typically the most difficult ones to answer. Examiners also use methods like the “lawyer of the devil “in order to test your knowledge on the subject of your dissertation.

What are the key dissertation questions are when defending a dissertation proposal?

You should be able to answer questions like: What is the main problem that your dissertation wants to deal with? Why is it a problem? What methodology / approach do you use to address the problem? What are the basic principles and the inherent problems of the approach selected? What other visual approaches etc-you could have used and why did you not (why did you not use the methodology xyz)? Why using these sources to which you refer (why not refer to XYZ source which addresses the aspect abc)? What are the key findings - results of your dissertation? How did you confirm the reliability / validity of results? What are the limitations of the results of your dissertation? What future work is needed to get to safer - more extensive findings – results?

This was a small dissertation help. Next time more dissertation ideas for your dissertation proposal will be discussed.

How to Ask the Five ‘W’s and One ‘H’ effectively?

Friday, February 6th, 2009

Essay questions kindle the curiosity of the reader

Very often essay questions are put forth by the writers. Have you ever wondered why questions are put forth in essays or blogs or any other articles? It is not only to kindle the curiosity of the reader but also to enlighten them over the unknown knowledge or information. The five W’s- what, when, where, why, who and the one H- how are the questions that are mostly asked by the writers. So, it is better to form an essay plan before you write your essay.

What?

The question ‘what?’ is asked by a writer when he wants to ask about the future. For example,
“What will happen to the world after 20 years?”
Such questions are asked in order to make the people think about the consequences or the results of the present events in the future.

When?

When is asked in essay questions to stress on the indefinite time period. Questions like,
“When will the women be given their freedom in the society?”
Here no one can say when the problem or the incident will have a definite solution, but it will be brought to the attention of the public.

Where?

This question is asked to the people when a consistent problem leads to another problem without any solutions
“Where will the indo-pak problem lead to?”
These are the questions asked when the problem exists at a long run without a solution.

Why?

Many writers in their essay questions like to use the question “why?” when they are discussing the social problems mainly.
“Why is the problem of illiteracy still prevailing?”
These questions are asked in order to make the people think about the problem and encourage them to take initiatives over the problem.

Who?

This is asked for the people to acknowledge the source of the problem which is quite obvious to the people.
“Who is responsible for terrorism in the world?”
Sometimes the question may have two or more answers else the answer as still a mystery to the world.

How?

This is asked to bring out the cause or the steps to be taken for a problem. Many may not know the actual reason or the cause of the problem. So questions like these help the people to acknowledge the initial cause
“How did the cast system start?”
Such questions make the people think about the cause of the incidents or the problems.

These essay questions are asked when the writer is writing about the social problems in the society. There are questions asked in lighter subjects also. They are mostly commercial prone and are asked to captivate audience and to have as many readers as possible. The questions asked in college or school essays are entirely different. They mostly involve the subject that the student is writing. They ask questions based on their researches, on the statistics, etc. these questions are asked so as to increase the knowledge of the students. The essay conclusion must also be effective. These questions are as effective as the essay titles. Though catchy titles of the essay create a curiosity in the reader, the questions absorbs the reader.

Recommendations for writing a good essay – Part 1

Tuesday, February 3rd, 2009

Some tips for a good essay format.

Your essay plan should contain the following:

Content and Language

Good work is not just bounded to those mentioned in class or in this presentation, but goes further by showing comprehensive understanding of key issues and critical synthesis capacity (and not merely descriptive). In many cases, it is a result of bibliographic and perhaps primary research (visit reports, sites review etc.). Other items that a good essay should have:

Correct English (grammar, syntax, spelling)

Net essay structure and a focused essay topic

Rational arguments based on evidence and supported by data

Balanced and not one-sided presentation of issues

In-depth coverage without significant errors or skips

(desirable, but not required): imagination and originality

Presentation

The bulk of the work (excluding bibliography and references) should not exceed the number of words you were given by your instructor (check word count in your word editor and provide the number of words in the title page). The work should be typewritten and should include the following:

Essay title page with your name, email address, title of work, date, number of words and the course title

Table of Contents

List of photographs or images (if used) with page number

List of tables and diagrams (if used) with page number

Thank-you page (if you feel the need to thank someone)

The main part of your student essay (which can be divided into parts according to your discretion)

Annexes

Bibliography of references used in text

Images

The images should be either original photographs or photocopies. They should be incorporated in the text or on a separate page or on a page with text. They should be numbered as in the photo list, indicate the number in the text, which should be accompanied by a caption. If you use any photos and the number of them have to do with the topic you chose to expand and their availability.

Diagrams

The diagrams need not be complex and they can be originals or photocopies. The same rules apply for the images.

Footnotes

It is better to avoid the footnotes because it is difficult to typing and create problems in the publications. Try to integrate the information you would write in footnotes to the main text or in the Annex (s).

Writing a good essay is a real experience! In part 2 there will be some more essay writing tips!
