Some Essay Sentences Tips you may Find Helpful

An essay sentence should be a reflection of the essay itself

Sentences are the first language structure with a full meaning attached. While words can be ambiguous, sentences are already giving the reader or the listener some valuable information. When you are writing your essay, you should consider all the essay sentences as a reflection of the essay itself: they must be concise, coherent and meaningful.
If you are not sure where to begin with, pay attention to the following tips which you may find useful when working on an essay.

Mixing long and short sentences

The best you can do for improving you essay sentences is to vary your sentence extension. An essay full of short sentences will seem written by a six year old: “My father is my hero. He is the best. He has worked all his life. I owe it all to him.”. On the other hand, an essay full of very long sentences will be quite difficult to read since the reader will get lost –and bored- pretty quickly. In fact, the best essay style is one that alternates between long sentences and short sentences. That makes them easier to read.

Varying the sentence structure

For the same reasons that we specified above, varying the sentence structure is also helpful. Use exclamatory and interrogative sentences, even if the questions are only rhetorical: “Who is the person that has left the deepest impression in my life? I must say it’s my father”. Alternating between passive and active voice is also highly recommended.

Some useful sentences

Finally, here are some sentences that, even if they may sound a bit of a cliche, can be useful if you can’t find the appropriate register for writing your essay. Any teacher would be delighted to read something as:

a) Compare and contrast essay sentences
– I do completely agree with the statement (or) I completely disagree for the following reasons…
– There are a lot of reasons for that choice and I would like to put them in the following way…
– Even if X has its advantages, I find myself inclined to choose Y because…
– As far as I am concerned, I prefer…
– One reason for supporting X is…

b) For quoting authorities
– We totally agree with Mr. X when he claims he…
– There is a reason that forces us to accept Mr. Y’s point of view…
– As stated by Mr. W…

c) For concluding an essay
– From all those reasons above…
– So, based on all the above mentioned points, I think…
– As far as I am concerned, I agree to say that…
– Last but not least…

Any essay sentence you should write has to be equally important in the whole work. After all, the essay is a much more complex system than the sentence, and it should find in them its cohesion and coherence. That is the difference between any essay and a good essay.
