How to Write An Acknowledgment: The Basics
April 13th, 2009Saying Thanks to Those Who Have Helped You
Do you want to learn how to write acknowledgment? As the term suggests, an acknowledgment is meant to express gratitude to everyone who has helped you accomplish each part of your English essay or dissertation. This is written on a separate page and is found in the beginning of the thesis. It comes after the dedication but before the essay introduction . It must not be too long; In fact, one page should be enough. While an acknowledgment can be very straightforward and it might not influence your final grade all that much, it would be nice if you spent a little more time composing something that is heartfelt and sincere. Getting a good essay done is after all not an easy task and those who have assisted and supported you deserve to be acknowledged and thanked.

Whom to Thank
1. Colleagues. More often than not, your colleagues will have some significant contribution to your work especially if you have done research on related essay topics. Acknowledge then the ideas that they have shared with you, mention how their work has influenced yours, and thank them for their insights and comments on your work.
2. Seniors. Did you seek the advice of someone with more professional experience – perhaps a former professor, an old boss or an expert on the topic you have chosen? His or her specific input must be mentioned in the acknowledgment. Their wisdom and the benefit of their experience have after all guided you in writing.
3. Loved ones. It’s hard to get through anything without the support of those closest to you. Perhaps the greatest help you will ever need is someone to talk to when things get crazy. Do not take their support for granted. Here you can find a splendid collection of good proposal topics for essays
Do and Don’ts on how to write acknowledgment
1. Keep your language appropriate and formal. This may be the most personal part (if not the only personal part) of your work. Still, this is no love letter. The level of language used must remain consistent with the rest of the essay.
2. Be conscious of grammar and generally accepted rules in writing. Nothing ruins the credibility of a writer more than a disagreement in subject and verb or a poorly constructed sentence. Anygood essay should be edited and proofread several times.
3. Don’t attempt to thank everybody in your life. Sure, they have helped one way or the other in the completion of anything you have done but it does not mean you have to include them in your thesis acknowledgment. Stick to the people who have helped you in that particular dissertation.
4. Try not to miss anybody as well – especially those you know in a professional capacity. Forgetting somebody is a big no-no especially if you have specifically sought their advice.
5. Be concise and gracious.
6. Use full names when referring to the people in your acknowledgment and do not misspell anybody’s name.
7. Try to write your acknowledgments as though they were short essays themselves.
