Should You Speak Your Mind in an Abortion Essay?
Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010Why it is better keeping your opinion to yourself when writing an abortion essay.
There are some subjects that are tremendously controversial and some people find very difficult writing about. Such may be the case when you are asked to write an abortion essay. Whether you think of yourself as pro-life or pro-choice, preparing a paper about this issue can be indeed very challenging. In this dissertation writing one question tends to rise: Shall I say what I really think about abortion?
Do some research first
Abortion is a delicate matter: it means interrupting a pregnancy, which for some people –but not for all- equals killing an unborn child. You can’t just say what you think about it whitout hearing some qualified opinions first. A good idea is to start working for your essay interviewing a doctor who performs abortions and a doctor that refuses to do them; a biology teacher; a priest; some women with different opinions in the matter.
Of course you may find difficult dealing with some of these interviews, but you may as well read different opinions on abortion before starting to write about it.
Know your audience
Who is asking for this essay? You may get some clues on what to write according to the institution you are writing for. Is it a religious school you are attending? Then the teacher is probably looking for students to prove that abortion is wrong. Is the paper a college application essay for a state where abortion is legal? Then they will be more open in hearing a pro-choice opinion. Before you speak your mind, you should know if your true opinion will help you or, on the contrary, get you into trouble.
Remember that since you don’t know for sure the reader’s point of view (and how strong he or she feels about abortion) you should avoid giving your opinion in a very strong way, because in the worst of events your grades could be affected if the examiner feels the paper as a personal attack.
There are two sides to every story
As capital punishment, abortion tends to create very strong opinions in people, some of them fighting against it with all their strength, and some supporting it with equally strong beliefs. Any teacher that asks their students for such an essay, surely expects to find both opinions in every paper. At least, any essay about abortion should give enough arguments on both sides so as to justify the current debate that is installed in many countries of our western society.
So here’s a good tip if you need assignment help: even if you wish to share your feelings about a delicate subject as abortion itself, you should dedicate a similar amount of words to explain the arguments given by people with the opposite point of view. Even if you prove them wrong with proper arguments later on.
Remember that if you need coursework help you can always find a professional who will guarantee a first quality essay writing service.
